Peptides in Saskatoon: Synchrotron Science and a Clock of Its Own

Beamtime at the Canadian Light Source is handed out twice a year by committee. Proposals go to at least two external reviewers, are scored one to five on scientific merit, are ranked, and are then allocated by a separate committee. If your proposal lands, you get shifts. If your experiment then fails for a reason unrelated to your hypothesis, you do not buy replacement shifts — you wait for the next call. That is the single most useful thing to understand about physical-science research in Saskatoon, and it is why this page is organised around instruments rather than shipping.

Canada's only synchrotron, and how you get on it

The Canadian Light Source is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan and, in its own words, the only synchrotron in Canada. Running since 2005, it employs over 250 people and reports more than 5,700 users from over 200 institutions and roughly 8,000 publications. Its beamlines include protein crystallography, BioXAS, biomedical imaging, soft X-ray spectromicroscopy and mid-infrared spectromicroscopy — a list with obvious relevance to anyone characterising a molecule rather than merely using one.

The access mechanics are the interesting part. Calls for proposals open twice a year for the following six-month cycle. Peer-reviewed general-user beamtime carries a nominal access fee of one dollar per scheduled eight-hour shift, and an approved project stays active for two years without re-review. The constraint, then, is not money. It is the shift.

What a scarce eight-hour shift implies about input material

Suppose you have written a proposal, waited out a review round, been allocated shifts six months on, arranged travel and prepared samples. On the day, the data are ambiguous. You now have to work out whether the ambiguity is in the science or upstream of it — and if upstream, whether it is your preparation, your buffer, or the material you started from.

That last possibility is the cheapest to eliminate in advance and the most expensive to discover on the beamline. An independent purity and identity check on a supplied compound costs a small fraction of one wasted allocated shift once you price in the review cycle, the travel and the six months you do not get back. Nobody schedules a synchrotron run to test whether their vendor was honest — but the asymmetry means verifying input material is close to free relative to what it protects, and that logic holds for any shared instrument with a queue in front of it, which describes most of the serious analytical capacity in this city.

Our contribution to that is narrow and specific. Every lot is tested by an independent laboratory — HPLC‑UV for purity, mass spectrometry for identity — with the batch document published before the lot goes on sale and the lot number printed on the vial. That records what a third party observed about one lot on one date. It does not certify the contents of your freezer months later, and it is not a characterisation of your sample. The rest of the Saskatoon instrument set

The synchrotron gets the attention, but the University of Saskatchewan campus is unusually equipment-dense for a city this size.

  • Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) — a University of Saskatchewan research centre, fifty years in operation. Its Vaccine Development Centre is described on VIDO's own site as a containment level 3 capable biomanufacturing facility, with stated plans to add containment level 4 capacity. Note the name: it brands as VIDO. The older form "VIDO-InterVac" now survives mainly in a social-media handle — InterVac is a containment facility, not part of the organisation's name.
  • Toxicology Centre — a standalone University of Saskatchewan research centre, a rarer institutional arrangement than it sounds.
  • College of Pharmacy and Nutrition — the pharmaceutical-sciences base on campus, with an active food- and nutrition-security programme.
  • Global Institute for Food Security — a University of Saskatchewan institute at the crop-science end of the biosciences.
  • Royal University Hospital — the teaching hospital next to campus.
  • The Saskatoon research and technology park — long known as Innovation Place, now operated by Innovation Saskatchewan as its Saskatoon Research and Technology Park. It sits beside the university and houses agricultural, life-sciences and environmental tenants. Both names are in current use, so we flag the ambiguity rather than quietly picking one.

None of these organisations is a customer, partner or affiliate of ours. They are why Saskatoon is a research city; they are not evidence about our order book.

Canola country and the bioactive-peptide question

Saskatchewan produced 12.2 million tonnes of canola in 2025 out of a Canadian total of 21.8 million — roughly 56% of national output, per the Canola Council of Canada's production statistics. That is not trivia in this context. Food-derived bioactive peptides — sequences released from plant and animal proteins during processing or digestion — are a live academic field, and Saskatoon is where the crop-science institutes, the pharmaceutical-sciences college and the raw agricultural volume sit within a few kilometres of each other.

This is context, not product. Peptides released from oilseed protein in a food-science laboratory are a different class of object from the synthetic research compounds we supply. We make no claim connecting the two beyond the observation that Saskatoon holds an unusual concentration of people who work on peptides for reasons that have nothing to do with medicine.

The clock that does not move

Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving time. The province stays on Central Standard Time all year, and Saskatoon is the only destination we ship to where the offset from our dispatch clock changes with the season while the local clock stays put.

The consequence is small but real. Because our dispatch window is anchored to British Columbia business days, a given moment in our afternoon falls later in the Saskatoon working day in winter than in summer: an order at the end of a BC afternoon in January arrives with two hours already gone from your clock, where in July it would be one. Readers in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary can safely add a fixed number of hours all year, because those provinces change their clocks with British Columbia. Here that habit is wrong for about four months a year.

Tax, transit, and the figure we will not calculate

Saskatchewan's combined statutory rate is 11%: 5% GST plus 6% provincial sales tax. That is the lowest total of any province here that levies a PST or HST at all — only Alberta, with no provincial sales tax, is lower. We will not turn that into a landed-cost example, because whether a given item is taxable under Saskatchewan PST is a separate determination from the rate, with its own exemption rules, and we have not confirmed it.

On transit: Canada Post's October 2025 delivery standards list Saskatoon at one day from a Vancouver origin on Priority — an air service, not what most parcels travel on. British Columbia and Saskatchewan are both in Canada Post's Western region, but Saskatchewan is a different province, and Canada Post's own band definitions do not resolve cleanly for that case, so we quote no Expedited or Regular day range here. Regulatory status and research-use position

On 9 April 2026, Health Canada published a public advisory, “Think twice before injecting peptides bought online: unauthorized products can seriously harm you,” naming retatrutide, BPC-157, CJC-1295, GHK-Cu, MOTS-C, TB-500 and other compounds. The advisory states that peptides of this kind are generally regulated as prescription drugs in Canada, that unauthorized drug products are illegal, and — addressing the labelling convention this industry relies on directly — that this type of labelling does not make these products legal or exempt from regulatory requirements. On 11 June 2026 the Superior Court of Québec granted Health Canada a permanent injunction against a Canadian seller of injectable peptides; Health Canada announced it publicly on 29 July 2026. Enforcement is active.

Can a supplier's Certificate of Analysis replace characterising a compound on an instrument myself?

No, and it is not intended to. A Certificate of Analysis records what an independent laboratory observed about one lot on one date, using HPLC-UV for purity and mass spectrometry for identity. It cannot tell you what is in a vial after months of storage in your facility, and it does not substitute for characterising your own sample. What it does is let you rule out the input material when a downstream result looks wrong, which is worth doing before you spend an allocated instrument booking finding out.

Saskatchewan is a major canola producer and there is bioactive-peptide research here. Is that what you supply?
